Erectile dysfunction is an ailment that is continually increasing among men in the world today. According to a survey by the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio; out of every 4 men over the age of 40, one of them has erectile dysfunction. This is a particularly alarming figure considering that the figure is only going to rise in the years to come. Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability of the person to gain or maintain an erection firm enough for intercourse. This causes a lot of guilt and embarrassment to the person. In erectile dysfunction, not only the physical but the psychological health of the person is also affected. There are various psychological consequences of the ailment: · The person feels guilty for not being able to satisfy his partner. · Embarrassment of the individual is prominent since he has ‘lost’ his manhood. · Depression often sets in as a result of the ailment. · The person feels nervous every time, fearing the episode of erectile dysfunction will be repeated again. There are many medications that have been developed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Perhaps the most prominent among them is Viagra. Viagra is the world’s first oral ED pill. Its active compound is Sildenafil Citrate. Once taken the compound is usually passed out of the body through urine. The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale and use of the medication. Viagra was originally developed to treat pulmonary hypertension in men. Pulmonary hypertension is a lung condition in which there is increased pressure in the pulmonary arteries that travel from the heart to the lungs. Later it was found that Viagra also had a ‘side effect’ of causing erections. As such the medication was later used for the proper treatment of people who are suffering from erectile dysfunction. Let us look into the working of the ED pill, Viagra.
